Rising Damp
Examples of Rising Damp are usually less obvious than the pictures illustrated below, however regardless of the size or appearance, never ignore the warning signs !!!
Usually rising damp is caused by dormant water lying under your house, often a result of bad drainage or a leaking pipe.
After considerable time the rising damp can cause the structural integrity of the walls to be compromised. Often the mortar between the brick courses is soft and spongy, and the bricks themselves can become quite fragile.
Some visible signs of rising damp may be paint starting to lift from your skirting boards of a section of your walls, or possible you will see some swelling of the skirting timbers. Other signs are moist patches showing on either side of the walls.
Waterproofing Solutions . . .
To rectify problems like these, it is necessary to investigate and find the cause and carry out the necessary repairs. Once corrected, the next steps are to check out the sub floor ventilation and install extra vents if necessary to create more airflow. Sometimes it becomes necessary to install subfloor fans as well.
Why do so many structures have so many water proofing problems? The main reasons are inappropriate selection of materials, poor preparation and construction plus incorrect application of waterproof membrane. Cracking can occur through structural movement and may not be apparent.
